An old school mate rang up, completely out of the blue, to castigate me because a rash had broken out on his skin after he had followed instructions from a ‘liver cleansing book’. I kept my composure and politely reminded him that I hadn’t suggested he go on a liver cleanse diet, I haven’t written a book on liver cleansing nor have I seen or spoken with him for over 25 years! I went on to say that despite his current discomfort the skin rash will most likely disappear in a few days and he will probably feel better than he did prior to the diet. Sure enough, two weeks later, he rang back and apologised (his ‘s—t on the liver’ having subsided) and let me know that he did feel better and that his “skin is the best it’s been in years”. This experience confirmed further to me the validity of a couple of Naturopathic Principles:
a) Liver cleansing will improve your health but individuals need to be supervised by a health practitioner and,
b) That to improve the health and condition of skin you need to work from the INSIDE out – “All cure starts from the inside out”
Recently the actress Helen Mirren, a well-known face employed by a well-known brand of moisturiser, revealed her true feelings about its effectiveness, suggesting it “probably does f— all”. I’m not saying that all locally applied skin creams can’t help at all but if they do it will be, at best, only temporary unless work is done internally through natural cleansing (best if supervised) and dietary/lifestyle adjustments.
Some general guidelines for better skin:
a) Get moderate amounts of sun (never burn) and don’t smoke cigarettes
b) Nutrition – eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables – their antioxidants protect the skin
c) Avoid food additives and chemicals, and minimise sugar and alcohol for a body with less inflammation and ‘toxins’.
d) Speak to Mark re-liver and lymphatic cleansing and natural/traditional skin remedies that suite your individual needs
e) Work on stress levels (also speak to Mark)
